The Lakes

Lakes, Lagoons and Wilderness

Arial view of the Lakes Touring through East Gippsland you can discover the largest and most magnificent inland waterway systems of Australia, covering some 400 square kilometres. Made up of lakes, rivers and lagoons, the inland waterways are separated from sea by a strip of coastline known as Ninety Mile Beach, one of the most secluded and untouched ocean beaches in the world.

The region offers a variety of natural beauty and recreational activities such as lake, river or ocean fishing, boating, cruising, surfing, swimming or nature watching. The Lakes are a haven for an array of wildlife such as black swans, pelicans, dolphins, koalas and kangaroos.

The township - Lakes Entrance, is a popular destination for local holidaymakers and lies at the mouth of the Lakes. The town caters well for both seaside recreation and exploration of the mountain countryside to the north. The town has one of the most active fishing fleet's in Victoria.

Take advantage of the sight seeing cruises the lake has to offer, or hire a boat or participate in fishing charters. For the more adventurous, climb on board a plane for a joy flight and see the magnificent coastlines from up above.

Further along at the Croajingolong National Park, which runs along the coast, you can tour along the roads that take you to delightful little inlets like Sydenham, Tamboon, Thurra and Wingan.

At Point Hicks is where Captain James Cook made his famous first sighting of the Australian mainland back in 1770. Discover the 100-year-old lighthouse, fish, swim, canoe, walk or simply relax and soak up the natural surroundings.

Mallacoota is nearly the last town before hitting the NSW boarder and is a great fishing village with a thriving abalone industry. When in season you can dine on this local delicacy at any of the local restaurants, which is a real treat.

Within easy reach of the Lakes area, the Alpine and High Country region merges, so it's possible to deviate from your seaside adventure and explore the Alpine regions.
